What is sleep apnoea?
There are approximately 200,000 Hong Kong people who are suffering from sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a serious health problem, in which the upper airway is either partially or completely obstructed during sleep. Patients may experience difficulty in breathing during sleep, although most only have the symptom of snoring. Obstruction at the airway may last for seconds to minutes. This reduces blood oxygen saturation level, which in long-term, could cause heart failure and stroke. All these airway obstructions could result in arousals. Patients may develop daytime sleepiness, and more severely, with their cognitive functions and emotions affected. Obesity is the commonest cause of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults, however, there are numerous other possible causes. Our centres in Hong Kong and Macau provide a range of services to diagnose your condition and devise an appropriate treatment plan.
